Former closer, Jose Valverde has been unconditionally released by the Detroit Tigers. This season, he had a 5.59 ERA in 19.1 innings pitched, and racked up nine saves in 12 save opportunities.

Jose Valverde, Prince FielderValverde became the Tiger’s single season saves leader in 2011 with 43 saves that year. Also, that year he had 49 saves in 49 save opportunities.

The wheels came off of the cart for him in 2012 and by the end of the season he became a free agent.

When the Tigers began the 2013 season, they were without a closer and Valverde found his way back into a Tiger’s uniform. With a small amount of success, but not nearly enough for a team looking to make the playoffs, he was designated for assignment.

He cleared waivers and had accepted a position with the Toledo Mud Hens before being released today.
